The Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) is still pushing for Donte DiVincenzo’s presence at EuroBasket 2025, but pessimism is growing. Bureaucratic hurdles remain, and as of today, the New York Knicks guard’s participation is hanging by a thread.
🇮🇹 The Italian Basketball Federation continues to work on the Donte DiVincenzo front, but in recent days there has been growing pessimism: the player’s presence at Eurobasket 2025 is increasingly in doubt. Darius Thompson in an option (Alessandro Luigi Maggi) 🔵 https://t.co/rzR5UM5CMY

Despite a verbal commitment from DiVincenzo during a meeting earlier this month, delays in passport processing are putting everything at risk. “The issue is the passport. Without it, we can’t move forward,” said Gigi Datome on April 7. Coach Gianmarco Pozzecco echoed the same sentiment days later: “The Federation has done everything. Now it’s up to the system.”
With no breakthroughs in sight and time running out, Sportando has learned that talks with Darius Thompson have reopened. The Anadolu Efes guard, Italian through marriage, has held a valid passport for over a year. After early discussions in 2022 stalled, the idea is now back on the table.
Italy continues to work behind the scenes to build the strongest possible roster. If DiVincenzo can’t make it, could Darius Thompson be the surprise addition for EuroBasket 2025?
