Gregg Popovich has added another ring to his collection, although this time it is not an NBA championship ring.
According to TMZ, the longtime former San Antonio Spurs head coach has married Mary Barth Budenholzer, the former wife of Mike Budenholzer, Popovich’s longtime assistant in San Antonio.
Wedding in Texas
According to a marriage license obtained by TMZ, Popovich and Mary Barth Budenholzer got married on September 16 in Texas, in Bexar County.
It is not known exactly when their relationship began. However, Popovich and Mary were seen together at Spurs games during last season.
Popovich and Budenholzer’s long history
The marriage is particularly notable because of the professional relationship between Popovich and Budenholzer.
Mike Budenholzer worked as Popovich’s Spurs assistant for nearly 20 years, from 1996 to 2013, helping San Antonio win all five of its NBA championships during the Popovich era.
Budenholzer left San Antonio in 2013 to become head coach of the Atlanta Hawks, beginning his own career as an NBA head coach.
Both had previously been married
Mary and Mike Budenholzer quietly divorced in 2016.
Two years later, in 2018, Popovich’s first wife, Erin Popovich, died following a severe illness. The nature of the illness was not publicly disclosed.
In 2026, Popovich and Mary decided to get married.
Mike Budenholzer has also since entered a new relationship.
The San Antonio Spurs declined to comment on Popovich’s marriage when contacted by TMZ.
