It’s Greece who celebrates on the podium at the Riga Arena, returning to the EuroBasket medal ranks for the first time in 16 years, since their bronze in 2009.
The game was largely controlled by Spanoulis’ men, who unlike in their semifinal showing came out strong and quickly built a lead thanks to key plays from Dorsey and the ever-reliable Giannis.
Finland, however, refused to back down. With four players scoring in double digits, they made a stunning late comeback after trailing by as many as 17 points. Jantunen even had a chance to give his team the lead with a put-back at the rim, but the ball wouldn’t drop.
Unlucky for coach Tuovi’s squad, the rim said no and the Scandinavian underdogs had to settle for a hard-fought fourth-place finish after a remarkable tournament.
Giannis sealed Greece’s win with a historic performance: 30 points (9/11 FG), 17 rebounds, and 6 assists, lifting his country back among the top three national teams in Europe.
