Kristaps Porzingis’ situation continues to loom over the Golden State Warriors. The center has been away from the team since the eve of training camp, and ESPN reports that there is significant pessimism inside the organization that he will ever play for Golden State again.
The Warriors re-signed Porzingis to a two-year, $40 million deal during the offseason, but only $3 million of the second season is guaranteed. The contract was also structured so he could be traded immediately. His official status has since been changed from “general illness” to “not with team.” The organization has internally discussed whether his absence could be considered a failure to render services, which could potentially open the door to an attempt to void the contract, although that route would be complicated.
A trade remains the preferred option. Golden State is currently $20.4 million into the luxury tax, and removing Porzingis’ salary would wipe out nearly all of that bill while moving the Warriors below the first apron. For now, the front office appears willing to remain patient and wait for the trade market to develop, with a buyout also among the possible scenarios.
