Giannis Antetokounmpo had plenty of praise for Luka Doncic following the Miami Heat’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers last night. The Greek Freak went as far as to describe the Slovenian superstar as one of the greatest scorers in basketball history, suggesting he could eventually be considered the best ever.
“I try not to follow the MVP race and stuff like that. I try to focus on what I can do, my team and how we can get better.
But is Luka an MVP-caliber player? No doubt. He’s always been up there, and he’s definitely in the conversation this year. What he’s doing is incredible. And it’s not just about his individual numbers: his team is winning (six wins in eight games). They’re playing well offensively, everybody is involved, and they’re in a good place right now. He’s averaging 38 points and his team is winning, so he’s definitely got to be in the MVP discussion. At the end of the day, he’s one of the best scorers…”
“Right now?” a reporter asked.
“Not right now. I mean all-time. Sometimes I feel like people are scared to say it, but Doncic has got to be up there among the best ever.
He’s also an elite passer. When your teammates are ready to make decisions as soon as he gets them the ball, it makes the game easier for everybody. It’s not like they weren’t being aggressive. They were trying to attack the basket and create their own shots. That’s what makes the game easier for everyone.
After every double-team, you could see Luka telling them, ‘Hey, be aggressive, attack downhill.’ That gave his teammates confidence. Sometimes, when you face a player like that, you try to take something away from him. What I can say is that we didn’t do a good enough job of slowing him down. Hopefully, we can do better next time.”
Doncic finished the game with 42 points on 14-of-24 shooting from the field and 8-of-10 at the free-throw line, along with seven rebounds and 13 assists. Antetokounmpo recorded 30 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.
