The banner honoring one of the greatest players in club history had been taken down amid tensions between Giannakopoulos and Bodiroga, who now serves as EuroLeague President. However, the Panathinaikos owner has now reversed his stance.
“Everyone makes mistakes. Dejan Bodiroga was a Panathinaikos legend, a legend of European basketball and, above all, he is now my friend. Putting everything else aside, he is my friend.”
Speaking on the Euro Insiders podcast, Giannakopoulos explained that he disagreed with some of Bodiroga’s actions in his current role but acknowledged that his reaction had gone too far.
“He is still active in basketball, and when you are involved in the game, you have to accept both applause and criticism. I wasn’t happy with some things.”
Giannakopoulos then confirmed that the club will restore the tribute.
“My decision was clearly wrong, and it will be corrected. The banner will return. It will return very soon.”
