Gerry Cardinale: The EuroLeague is unsustainable. Soccer clubs should collaborate with the NBA

Gerry Cardinale, the head of AC Milan, recently gave an important and highly anticipated interview to *La Gazzetta dello Sport* during this turbulent period for the Rossoneri. But the RedBird CEO also spoke about NBA Europe.

“The NBA is probably the only truly international sport that originated in the United States. And as we’ve seen, the days of the Dream Team with Michael Jordan, Magic, and Larry Bird are long gone. You saw it at the Olympics, and you’ve also seen it in the fact that many of the most recent NBA MVPs have come from Europe. So Europe has truly become a powerhouse when it comes to basketball, and there’s a huge opportunity for collaboration between America and Europe, which is music to my ears.

But even here, I think about it in terms of: “How does this help AC Milan?” The EuroLeague has been around for 26 years, and most of the teams aren’t profitable. It’s not sustainable. So I think it’s up to European soccer clubs to collaborate with the NBA and bring NBA basketball to Europe. And that’s what I’ll try to do in Milan. The goal is to continue elevating the Milan brand, offer opportunities to the fanbase, and continue improving our financial profile. So it’s all part of an ecosystem where everyone should benefit from one another.”

It should be noted that Gerry Cardinale has long had an agreement in place with Pallacanestro Varese in the event that the NBA Europe project moves forward. Olimpia Milano, on the other hand, is in ongoing discussions with Oaktree, the fund that owns Inter.
