Gence BC coach accuses FIBA after five players allegedly injured in elevator accident

Head coach Martin Knezevic has strongly criticized FIBA after claiming that five Gence BC players were injured in an elevator accident at the team hotel before Wednesday’s FIBA Europe Cup game against Esenler Erokspor.

«My guys fell three floors»

Gence BC suffered a 92-63 loss to Esenler Erokspor in Istanbul in its opening Group C game of the FIBA Europe Cup.

After the game, however, head coach Martin Knezevic revealed details of an incident that allegedly occurred the previous night.

According to Knezevic, five Gence players were injured after an elevator collapsed at the team’s hotel, with the players falling three floors.

«My guys fell three stories and are lucky to not have life-changing injuries,» Knezevic wrote on Facebook.

Gence reportedly asked FIBA to postpone the game

According to the coach, Gence asked FIBA to postpone the game following the incident.

The request was reportedly denied.

Knezevic then sarcastically addressed the decision after the loss:

«Not surprised by the final score vs. Erokspor tonight, considering five of our players were injured in a collapsed elevator at the team hotel last night.»

He continued:

«Oh, and thank you to FIBA for ignoring our request to postpone this game with multiple players out. You guys are the best.»

Only 10 Gence players saw the court

Gence had 12 players registered for the game, but only 10 appeared on the court.

Two players did not play at all, while Aydin Ibrahimov logged just 2:09.

Kobe Magee led Gence with 16 points, while Latavious Mitchell added 13 points and 7 rebounds and Brandon Ellington finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Erokspor wins comfortably

Esenler Erokspor dominated the game and opened its European campaign with a convincing 92-63 victory.

Kevin Yebo led the Turkish side with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while veteran guard Errick McCollum added 15 points.
