Garrison Mathews is trying to focus on the positives despite Olimpia Milano’s difficult start to the EuroLeague season. The American guard, playing in Europe for the first time in his career, has seen his team slip to the bottom of the standings with just one win in nine games.
Mathews spoke to SKWeek following Milano’s road loss to Panathinaikos, discussing his adjustment to European basketball and the team’s current struggles.
On his first experience in Europe:
“It’s been an adjustment. I’ve had some good games, some bad games. It’s part of it. The differences on the court? Spacing, probably a little bit of physicality, just being able to get shots, get open shots”
On Milano’s difficult situation:
“I think we’re building chemistry and we’re getting better. There’s definitely way more pressure than there is in the NBA. Like I said, you can win, you can lose, even six. It turns around fast. I don’t know what the future holds, but all I know is we’re getting better.”
Mathews has played in 10 games between the LBA and EuroLeague, averaging 9.2 points (38% FG, 37% 3P, 79% FT) in 18 minutes per contest, along with 2 rebounds per game. He also has a positive steals-to-turnovers differential.
