NBA franchise values have soared over the past 25 years, turning team ownership into one of the most lucrative investments in professional sports.

Back in 2002, the Boston Celtics were sold for a then-record $360 million, setting the benchmark for NBA franchise sales. Twenty-three years later, the Celtics changed hands again for $6.1 billion, establishing a new North American sports record.
That mark didn’t last long. The Los Angeles Lakers have now shattered the record after agreeing to a $12.5 billion sale to an ownership group led by Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, making it the most expensive sale of a professional sports franchise ever.
Compared to the Celtics’ record sale in 2002, the value of the NBA’s most expensive franchise has increased by nearly 35 times. The remarkable surge has been fueled by booming media rights, the influx of institutional investors and the ever-growing global appeal of elite American sports franchises.
