Fred VanVleet believes that the basketball world has yet to fully grasp the magnitude of Kevin Durant’s greatness — and that true appreciation may only come once Durant is no longer playing.
VanVleet drew parallels to other all-time greats, noting how fans often gain perspective only in retrospect.
“People are not going to appreciate Kevin Durant fully until he’s not playing anymore,” VanVleet said. “We see this with all of the greats.”
Reflecting on iconic media moments, VanVleet referenced interviews from legends such as Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant, explaining how those conversations have become lasting touchstones for fans.
“I remember my favorite Allen Iverson interviews. I remember my favorite Kobe Bryant interviews,” he said. “And I’m just thinking about it from a KD fan perspective.”
VanVleet added that Durant’s recent interview stood out as a defining moment, offering a rare window into the star’s mindset and personality beyond the court.
“I think that’ll be an interview people can go back to,” VanVleet explained. “You get a great look at his mindset, who he is, and his personality as a man. It showed his comfort in his own skin. That part was dope.”
