Former NBA champion J.R. Smith arrested in Texas on family violence charge

Former NBA player and two-time champion J.R. Smith was arrested in Texas. According to TMZ, he was taken into custody on an active warrant tied to an alleged family violence assault.

Police said Smith was arrested Monday after an automatic license plate reader flagged the vehicle he was driving and alerted officers to the warrant. He was then pulled over and booked into the Hunt County Detention Center.

According to jail records cited by TMZ, Smith was booked on a charge of “assault causing bodily injury – family violence.” No bond had been set at the time of publication.

Smith played 16 NBA seasons and won championships with Cleveland in 2016 and the Lakers in 2020.
