FIBA World Cup history: Basketball enters a football stadium in Qatar

Al Janoub Stadium has been transformed into an 8,200-seat basketball arena and will host Qatar against China in the Asian Qualifiers

A FIBA Basketball World Cup game will be played inside a football stadium for the first time in the competition’s history. The landmark event will take place in 2027 at Al Janoub Stadium, one of the venues used for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

A first dress rehearsal is scheduled for Thursday, August 27, when Qatar host China at 6:00 pm CET to open the Second Round of the Asian Qualifiers. Designed by Zaha Hadid and inaugurated in 2019, the stadium has been converted into an enclosed basketball venue with a capacity of 8,200.

Al Janoub Stadium will be one of four venues used for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, alongside Al Attiyah Arena, Duhail Arena and Lusail Multi-Purpose Hall. The Qatar-China qualifier will offer an early look at the experience awaiting teams and fans in Doha next year.
