EuroLeague teams ease back to safe training

Valencia Basket was the first team to return to practice, on Monday, May 4

An ease in restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic in different countries across the continent has allowed several Turkish Airlines EuroLeague to begin workouts over the past week while others expect to join them in the coming days. All the teams have strictly followed the guidelines issued by the respective public health bodies in their countries.

Valencia Basket was the first team to return to practice, on Monday, May 4. The club took advantage of its practice facility, L’Alqueria, being located only meters from Valencia’s headquarters and home court, to ensure that each player had a dedicated space to train and dress. The players are working out individually, doing stretching, conditioning and movement, with and without the ball, as well as shooting drills with automated ball-return machines. Between each round of workouts, employees disinfect the rims, backboards, parquet and even treadmills. L’Alqueria is recycling the air in the building 24 hours a day so the players can train in the best possible conditions.

Real Madrid followed suit on Monday with players practicing separately in rotations of small groups at the club’s training facility to avoid unnecessary contact. The players worked out individually in the open air under the orders of trainer Juan Trapero and following the security protocols of the Spanish government. Two one-hour sessions were held on Monday morning.

FC Barcelona also started on Monday with medical exams ahead of beginning solo training sessions in the coming days, following protocols established by health authorities. The medical tests began at 8:30 a.m. an included all players and coaches except Malcolm Delaney, who is set to join the team later. Once the results of the exams are available, the club announced, individual training sessions will start.

Likewise, AX Armani Exchange Milan began voluntary, individual workouts for players in the Milan area on Saturday.

Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade, having done all the necessary testing for players who remained in Serbia during the stay-at home-period, started with outdoor practices on Tuesday.

KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz is schedule to resume workouts on Thursday, May 14 in BAKH, the club-owned sports facility adjacent to Fernando Buesa Arena. Following weeks of on-line guided work from team trainers, Baskonia will return to the court. First, however, the players will undergo medical examinations. BAKH has three full basketball courts, which will allow six players to train at the complex at one time. All the players are required to keep a four-meter distance from one another and must wear masks and gloves at all times aside from when they are on the court.
