The EuroLeague is preparing for one of the biggest format changes in its history. The 2026-27 season is expected to be the final campaign played under the current 20-team round-robin system, before the competition expands and adopts a conference-based format.
The news was confirmed by EA7 Emporio Armani Milan general manager Christos Stavropoulos during an interview with EOK Web Radio.
“We decided to keep the 20-team round-robin format for one more year. But this will definitely be the last.”
According to Stavropoulos, beginning with the 2027-28 season, the EuroLeague will feature more teams and introduce conferences instead of having every club play each opponent home and away.
“Starting next year, the number of teams will increase and the system will be different, with conferences. Some teams will no longer play twice against every opponent, but you lose something and you gain something.”
Stavropoulos stressed that maintaining the league’s elite level remains the priority despite the structural changes.
“The EuroLeague is Europe’s premier competition and has tremendous quality.”
The possibility of introducing conferences had already been discussed internally over recent months, but Stavropoulos’ comments provide the clearest confirmation yet that a major transformation is on the horizon for European basketball.
