The EuroLeague could look significantly different in the 2026/27 season. According to BasketNews, AS Monaco could choose to compete in the EuroCup next season, potentially opening up a spot in Europe’s premier club competition.
EuroLeague shareholders would currently be considering two different options. The first would be to award a wildcard to Besiktas Istanbul, widely viewed as the leading candidate to replace Monaco following its recent growth and strong performances.
The second, more unusual scenario would see the league operate with 19 teams instead of replacing the French club. Under this format, one team would have a bye each round and the regular season schedule would be reduced from 38 to 36 games. Supporters of the idea believe it could help ease the growing workload concerns that have become a major topic across European basketball.
