Ettore Messina was honored this morning at the Regional Council during an event marking the 100th anniversary of the Italian national basketball team’s first game. Here are his remarks, as reported by AGI. Regarding the institutions of our basketball, the hope is to: “organize Italian and European basketball well, following the lead of what we’re hearing a lot about these days regarding the reorganization of the work currently underway between the EuroLeague and national leagues.” On the relationship between the NBA and the EuroLeague: “I hope an agreement can be reached between the NBA, EuroLeague, and FIBA to ensure consistency and logic in the schedules and to make these clubs a little less like money-losing machines. All of us in Europe are struggling a bit because we rely on prominent figures—like Giorgio Armani did for many years—to support these clubs, and it’s obvious that this makes things difficult.” And on Olimpia Milano in the EuroLeague: “Mathematically, there’s still a chance, but we have a tough schedule, with three road games in our next four matches. We have to win them all and hope the others slip up.”
