Erik Spoelstra is the new head coach of USA men’s basketball, succeeding Steve Kerr, as confirmed by The Athletic. When Grant Hill and Sean Ford asked him to take the job over dinner in Miami, Spoelstra said, “No hesitation — I had goosebumps. It’s an incredible honor to represent my country.”
A two-time NBA champion and six-time Finals coach, Spoelstra previously assisted Team USA in Tokyo and Paris, helping secure gold at the 2024 Olympics. Hill praised him as “the perfect choice to continue the national team’s legacy through 2028.”
Spoelstra emphasized sacrifice and unity as the foundation of his approach: “USAB already has its own culture. Everyone plays a different role, and that’s what makes it special.” His Heat star Bam Adebayo celebrated the announcement in practice — a moment Spoelstra called “really cool.”
