EA7 Emporio Armani Milano delivered a statement win and left Panathinaikos with no excuses. Postgame, Ergin Ataman was blunt: “terrible,” congratulations to Milano, apologies to fans, and full accountability.
The Turkish coach kept it short immediately after what was described as a shock defeat: “It was a tough game. We played terribly. Congratulations to Armani, who had to play with players coming off the bench. I don’t have much to say about the game.”
In the press conference, the message was even harsher toward his own team: “I think we threw away all the big road wins we had this season. We played terribly in the second half. It was hard to recognize the team—nothing worked. In basketball there are days when everything goes wrong, and tonight is a huge loss for us.” Then came the apology and ownership: “I apologize to all our fans and everyone who supports us. I take responsibility. We don’t have time to cry about it. We’re still on track with our goals. We have to forget the result and prepare for the next game.”
A day later, while urging calm (“this isn’t the time to create drama” and “it’s not time to panic”), Ataman raised the stakes with a personal pledge: “I have one more guaranteed year on my contract, but if we don’t win the EuroLeague or the Greek league title at the end of the season, I will leave Athens.”
