The former NBA center announced his plan to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, sparking debate over the league’s eligibility rules.

Enes Kanter Freedom has announced his intention to pursue a career in the WNBA. The former NBA player, now 34, stated that he plans to enter the league’s 2027 Draft, referring to the current eligibility guidelines.

Kanter’s decision, which comes from a player known for his civil rights activism and criticism of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has entered the ongoing debate surrounding transgender athletes’ participation in women’s competitions, a topic that has also created differing opinions within the WNBA.

“I’m not here to disrespect anyone. I’m simply asking that the rules be applied fairly and consistently,” said the former center, who played for the Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks, Portland Trail Blazers and Boston Celtics during his NBA career.

Kanter ended his announcement with a provocative message: “See you at training camp.”
