Dubai Basketball general manager Dejan Kamenjasevic has provided an update on the club’s roster plans and transfer strategy ahead of the upcoming season. Speaking to Mozzart Sport, the Bosnian executive discussed the targets of Xavi Pascual’s team while also addressing the ongoing speculation surrounding Dubai’s financial power.
The Emirati club is still looking for a playmaker, with Thomas Walkup among the players being considered. The Greek side Olympiacos, however, remains a key factor in any potential deal.
“We are looking for a playmaker. One of the players is Thomas Walkup. It will depend on the agreement with Olympiacos or his exit from that contract.”
Dubai have already assembled a roster featuring several experienced players, including Awudu Abass, Justin Anderson, Dwayne Bacon, Davis Bertans, Jaron Blossomgame, Nemanja Dangubic, Mamadi Diakite, Mouhammadou Jaiteh, Mfiondu Kabengele, Kenan Kamenjas, Kosta Kondic, Davion Mintz, Dzanan Musa, Elie Okobo, Filip Petrusev, Klemen Prepelic, Tornike Shengelia and McKinley Wright IV.
Kamenjasevic also addressed the frequent reports about Dubai’s supposedly enormous spending power. According to the general manager, the club’s financial capabilities are often exaggerated in the media. He pointed to the recent offer for Nikola Jokic made public by Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos as an example.
“When the owner of a club comes out and publicly says he made an offer to Jokic, that is fine. Imagine if Dubai had done that. Imagine if I came out and said, ‘We made an offer to Jokic’. How would you look at us? What would happen?”
The executive reiterated that Dubai’s operational budget is not among the top five in the EuroLeague, pushing back against some of the figures reported in recent months.
Kamenjasevic also touched on the NBA Europe project, describing it as “a cloud that constantly circles us”. He added: “Nothing will come of it, unless they reach a commercial agreement with the Euroleague.”
