Trump: “I don’t understand the Luka Dončić trade”
Luka Dončić became part of Donald Trump’s speech during the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention.
Speaking Wednesday night at the American Airlines Center, home of the Dallas Mavericks, the U.S. president addressed the blockbuster trade that sent the Slovenian superstar to the Los Angeles Lakers last year.
“I must tell you, I don’t understand the trade. That trade is not good,” Trump said.
He then took his criticism even further, suggesting the deal could eventually be remembered as one of the worst trades in sports history.
“It’s not going to go down as the greatest trade in the history of sports. It might go down as the worst trade in the history of sports.”

“Maybe we could redo that trade”
Trump then brought up one of the most infamous transactions in American sports history: the Boston Red Sox trading Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees more than a century ago.
“Maybe that one still deserves the distinction,” Trump acknowledged before joking about the possibility of revisiting the Dončić trade.
“Maybe we could redo that trade. I redo deals all the time. I understand deals. But that one, I didn’t quite get.”
Trump then moved on to other topics, including U.S. oil production and Iran.
The Dončić-Anthony Davis blockbuster
The trade between the Mavericks and Lakers was one of the most shocking transactions in recent NBA history.
Dallas sent Luka Dončić and two other players to Los Angeles, receiving Anthony Davis and a 2029 first-round pick as the principal pieces in return.
The move generated widespread criticism from Mavericks fans, many of whom were stunned by the decision to trade away the player who had become the face of the franchise.
Trump’s history of commenting on sports
This is not the first time Trump has used the presidential platform to weigh in on controversial sports topics.
He has repeatedly criticized the NFL’s new kickoff rules and previously commented on Shedeur Sanders falling out of the early rounds of the NFL Draft.
Trump also asked FIFA to review the one-match suspension handed to U.S. forward Folarin Balogun during the World Cup. FIFA later reversed the suspension, although Trump said he had not ordered the organization to do so.
