The Milwaukee Bucks are bracing to be without Giannis Antetokounmpo for a period closer to four weeks after he strained his right calf. Coach Doc Rivers urged caution, stressing that with calf injuries “you make sure they’re healthy,” even if that frustrates Giannis.
Antetokounmpo went down early against the Detroit Pistons, then gingerly walked to the locker room, with an initial timetable of two to four weeks. Rivers noted the Bucks’ lighter schedule after missing the NBA Cup and said the two had a long talk after the MRI, with Giannis in good spirits but, as usual, eager to come back sooner.
The two-time MVP is off to one of the best starts of his career at 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists on 64% shooting, and Milwaukee has struggled badly without him, going 1-5 and posting an offense that would rank near the bottom of the league. A longer absence could also threaten his award eligibility, with the NBA’s 65-game rule looming over his MVP and All-NBA chances.
