Deandre Ayton is finalizing a buyout with the Portland Trail Blazers, becoming a free agent, Shams Charania reports. The 27-year-old center had $35.6 million left on his deal, expiring next summer, but sought a move to a contender.
Ayton averaged 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds on 56.6% shooting last season, continuing his streak as one of the few players to average a double-double in each of his first seven NBA seasons.
The move clears Portland’s crowded frontcourt and frees Ayton to sign with any team, even above the second apron. A former Finals participant with the Suns, Ayton will now look for a fresh opportunity to compete at the highest level.
