Former NBA player Damon Jones is expected to plead guilty in the federal sports gambling and rigged poker investigation that led to more than 30 arrests last fall. According to the Associated Press, a change-of-plea hearing for Jones has been scheduled for April 28 in federal court in Brooklyn, which would make him the first defendant to formally admit guilt in the case.
Jones, 49, had previously pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors allege that he profited from rigged poker games and supplied bettors with non-public injury information about LeBron James and Anthony Davis while working for the Los Angeles Lakers.
According to AP, in one instance Jones allegedly advised a bettor to place a large wager based on insider information about James before it became public, while in another he was paid for information about Davis that later proved inaccurate. The broader investigation is the same one that in recent months also involved other NBA-related names, including Terry Rozier.
