Maccabi Tel Aviv general manager Claudio Coldebella was interviewed by Alessandro Gallo for QS.

Claudio Coldebella spoke to QS journalist Alessandro Gallo about life in Israel, the challenges of EuroLeague road trips, and his connection with one of European basketball’s most historic clubs. Here is an excerpt from the interview.

Coldebella, where are you right now?

“I’m in Tel Aviv at the moment, in a beautiful city.”

A city under lockdown?

“I would say it’s a beautiful city. The idea that it’s under lockdown is perhaps a preconceived notion. To understand it, you would have to experience it for yourself. And besides—” the executive continued, “I don’t think there’s a player who doesn’t like Tel Aviv.”

When did you first visit Israel?

“Perhaps in 1989 with Virtus Bologna. I’m going by memory: it was the middle of winter, and we arrived there to find the sea and 20-degree weather.”

How would you describe it to someone who doesn’t know the city?

“Perhaps somewhere between Miami and New York. Like the Big Apple, it has skyscrapers and chaotic traffic. But I think there’s an indicator that shows how much players like this destination.”

Which one?

“It’s simple. Bringing a player here isn’t impossible. A good offer might be enough.”

And yet?

“If a player didn’t feel comfortable here, they would leave once their contract expired. This year, too, we’ve had plenty of players renew their contracts, starting with Lundberg, whom you’ll remember from his time in Italy.”

Tel Aviv is fine, but you’re always on the road.

“That’s the problem. While another team can return to practice after playing against us, we’re flying. This is a peaceful country. Of course, it’s set up to deal with emergencies. But that’s part of this country’s history.”

Playing in Belgrade isn’t the same.

“I don’t think it’s right. I’m saying this for the sake of the EuroLeague product, too. Last Saturday, in the Israeli league against Galil Elyon, we had a sellout crowd: 11,000 people. Maccabi has always been the people’s team. When we play at home, it’s as if we start every game with a 100-point advantage.”

A provocation: it’s called the EuroLeague, but Israel isn’t in Europe.

“True. But what about Dubai? What about Turkey? Europe or Asia? Certain parts of Russia? Maccabi has always been part of this competition, ever since it was called the European Champions Cup. It has always fascinated me. I consider Maccabi one of the four clubs with the greatest history and legacy in Europe. The other three? Real Madrid, Panathinaikos and CSKA Moscow.”

You played for two Italian teams.

“I could continue the list of four by adding Olympiacos and the Fenerbahce team that Maurizio Gherardini took to the top. Then Milan and Virtus Bologna also have plenty of history and appeal.”

Your Maccabi team has just beaten Olimpia Milano.

“True, but Milan’s roster is one of the best in Europe.”

And Virtus Bologna?

“I find them exciting. They have their own philosophy and stick to it.”

Let’s play out the Final Four in advance: who will make it?

“I’d say Olympiacos, Fenerbahce and Panathinaikos.”

Greece thanks you. But that’s only three teams. Who’s the fourth?

“Maccabi, if, as I hope, we’re able to return to playing at home.”

Will you return to Italy?

“One day, yes. As an executive, I’ve had the opportunity to work for fantastic clubs, from Varese to Reggio Emilia, as well as Caserta and Treviso.”

How does Italy look from the outside?

“I’m optimistic; I can see things moving forward. I think of the Rome derby, and of the fact that Maurizio Gherardini is now at the helm of the Lega Basket.”

You and Maccabi are expected to inaugurate Bologna’s Unipol Hall.

“I’d be delighted. I can’t wait. New arenas are good for basketball. Modern, functional facilities also help the sport become more sustainable.”
