Coach Joan Penarroya commented on Partizan Belgrade’s heavy defeat against Maccabi Tel Aviv in EuroLeague Round 13, a game that marked his debut on the Serbian team’s bench.
Penarroya’s words:
“I want to congratulate Maccabi. It’s clear that we played a bad game. I think we were more or less good for seven or eight minutes. We had ideas on both defense and offense. In the first quarter we recorded 10 assists. We stayed united, but after seven minutes it became clear where our problems were: the team was not united and started playing individually. We have to analyze the situation, it’s a tough moment. We need to talk less and do more. I hope the situation changes, but for that to happen we need to have the right mentality.”
What needs to change:
“It’s not easy, my job is to analyze all the situations. I believe the most important thing is to change our mentality, to clear our heads. The players collapsed, they think too much and don’t focus on the game and on the court, which is the only thing they should focus on. We need to establish defensive rules, accept our bad situation and then work hard every day, improve step by step and get out of this situation. It’s very difficult to be optimistic, but I think I’m ready to change things. We need time, but it depends on mentality. We have talent, but the attitude is not good. We shared the ball and that’s the way forward. One thing is winning a game using individual talent; the key point is doing everything together.”
