James Harden sustained a nondisplaced fracture of his right thumb during Tuesday night’s win over the New York Knicks, the Cleveland Cavaliers announced on Wednesday. X-rays taken the same day confirmed the injury, and Harden was ruled out for Cleveland’s 118-116 loss at the Milwaukee Bucks after initially being listed as questionable.
According to ESPN, Harden has already been evaluated by a hand specialist and will not require surgery. The plan is for him to play through the injury while undergoing treatment and additional evaluations. Head coach Kenny Atkinson said it’s “a little too early” to define the exact prognosis. Teammate Jarrett Allen added: “I looked at his thumb and it looked like my finger when I broke it. So instantly I knew that something was wrong.”
Acquired from the LA Clippers on Feb. 3, Harden is averaging 18.9 points, eight assists and 4.6 rebounds in seven games with Cleveland. The Cavaliers are 37-23, have won eight of their last 10 games, and sit fourth in the Eastern Conference.
