In an exclusive interview with CityAM, EuroLeague CEO Chus Bueno discussed the league’s future, the NBA Europe project and why he believes European basketball’s top competition is stronger than ever.
“The EuroLeague has never been stronger.” That was the key message from CEO Chus Bueno in his exclusive interview with City AM, where he outlined the league’s long-term vision and confidence ahead of the NBA’s European expansion plans.
How strong is the EuroLeague today?
“I can say that we have never been better. We’re stronger, we’re together for 10 years, and the teams want to move to a franchise model, which means staying together forever.”
Bueno also dismissed concerns about the NBA’s growing presence in Europe.
Are you worried about NBA Europe?
“It’s OK to compete. We already compete with the Basketball Champions League. The EuroLeague will never disappear. Even in the worst-case scenario, if five teams leave, we would still have 15 teams.”
Despite the rivalry, Bueno believes cooperation remains possible.
Can the EuroLeague and NBA still reach an agreement?
“I hope so. I’m an optimistic guy and I think we can still figure it out. We haven’t found the right click yet, but from one week to another things can change.”
