Mitch Kupchak, President of Basketball Operations of the Charlotte Hornets, has announced his decision to leave his position to assume the role of organisational consultant.

The move paves the way for the franchise to immediately begin the search for a new manager, sources told ESPN on Monday morning.

Kupchak, 69, thus ends a successful career that includes 10 titles as an executive and as a player.

The search will focus on several incumbent general managers, including Philadelphia’s Elton Brand, New Orleans’ Trajan Langdon, Cleveland’s Mike Gansey, and the LA Clippers’ Trent Redden.

Brooklyn’s Jeff Peterson, Washington’s Travis Schlenk and Sacramento’s Wes Wilcox, all assistant GMs, are also among the candidates being considered.
