Charlotte’s front office did not believe Ball was the right player to build around long term, prompting the franchise to take a different direction.

The Charlotte Hornets’ decision to trade LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves reportedly stemmed from a lack of belief that the point guard was the right player to build a winning team around. According to Tim MacMahon, Charlotte did not view Ball as the ideal centerpiece for its long-term project.

The move brought Ball’s time in Charlotte to an end after he joined the franchise in 2020 and emerged as one of its leading talents. The Hornets opted to change direction, acquiring Naz Reid and several future draft assets as they look to build for sustained success.
