Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s new adventure in Philadelphia got off to anything but a quiet start. The new penthouse apartment of the 76ers player was reportedly struck by lightning just minutes after his wife, McKenzie, had signed the lease. McKenzie herself recounted the incredible incident on social media.

According to her account, the situation took a turn after a massive boom. Shortly afterward, water began pouring through the ceiling, flooding the apartment by several inches. McKenzie said everyone was forced to quickly evacuate the apartment, while the lightning strikes reportedly also damaged the building’s elevators.

To reach safety, Caldwell-Pope’s wife had to walk down 14 floors. Initially, building staff reportedly believed the sprinkler system had gone off, but firefighters and electricians who arrived at the scene later confirmed that the building had indeed been struck by lightning.

What makes the incident even more incredible is how rare it reportedly was. According to McKenzie, an electrician estimated that there was a one-in-400-million chance of a unit being struck by lightning in the way their apartment was.

Fortunately, no one was injured. It was certainly an unusual welcome to Philadelphia for Caldwell-Pope, who joined the Philadelphia 76ers for the upcoming season after his stint with the Memphis Grizzlies and is set to reunite with LeBron James, his former teammate on the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2020 NBA championship team.
