The franchise is rewarding the guard’s solid early impact after his first six NBA appearances with the team

The Brooklyn Nets are signing Malachi Smith to a second 10-day contract, continuing their evaluation of the guard after his call-up from the Long Island Nets. In his first six NBA games with Brooklyn, Smith averaged 6.2 points, 2.7 assists and 2.2 rebounds in 19.5 minutes, while shooting 50% from the field and from three-point range.

His new deal also reflects the work being done within Brooklyn’s G League pipeline. The Long Island Nets, coached by Mfon Udofia, have now produced three NBA call-ups this season: Malachi Smith and Grant Nelson to Brooklyn, plus Jeenathan “Nate” Williams to the Golden State Warriors on a two-way deal.

For Smith, this is another valuable chance to earn a longer look from the franchise before the season ends. After this second 10-day contract, Brooklyn would need to sign him for the rest of the season in order to keep him beyond that point.
