The season of Brandon McCoy Jr. is already over before it even began. The five-star guard has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee and will miss the entire upcoming season.
McCoy suffered the injury after slipping on the court early in Michigan’s game against KK Mega Superbet in Montenegro. He was unable to put weight on his leg and was helped off the floor.
A major blow for Michigan
The injury represents a significant setback for the reigning national champions and new head coach Mike Boynton Jr., who took over this summer on a two-year deal following Dusty May’s departure for the Dallas Mavericks.
McCoy, ranked No. 15 nationally by Rivals, had been projected to start alongside returning players Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney. Through Michigan’s first two games of its European tour, he was averaging 14.5 points and five rebounds.
McCoy was a potential 2027 lottery pick
McCoy entered the season as one of the top prospects for the 2027 NBA Draft after an impressive performance at April’s Hoop Summit.
The injury could now have an impact on his NBA future, raising questions over whether he will still enter the 2027 draft or postpone his decision until 2028.
Another major loss for the Wolverines
Michigan had expected McCoy to help fill the void left by Yaxel Lendeborg, Aday Mara and Morez Johnson Jr., all starters on last season’s national championship team who went on to become NBA Draft picks.
The Wolverines also added transfers Moustapha Thiam from Cincinnati and JP Estrella from Tennessee this offseason, along with a six-player freshman class.
