During a conversation with Brian Scalabrine on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Brad Stevens discussed the potential of the Boston Celtics ahead of the upcoming season.
“I always say this, and sometimes it may seem like I’m saying it to avoid the question. But that’s not the case. I’m simply never going to put a ceiling on this team. I really like this group. I think we have a roster with a lot of basketball IQ, versatility and depth. We have 14 players under contract plus a couple of two-way players, and I genuinely believe every one of them can contribute to the team.
“Looking back four or five years, one of our biggest challenges was figuring out how to win by taking advantage of every possible margin. We were picking at the end of the first round or in the second round, we didn’t have the ability to use the mid-level exception, and we couldn’t offer big contracts to free agents. So we had to bring in some players on two-way contracts and others on minimum deals, hoping they would fit into our system.
“Great credit goes to the players and their work ethic, as well as our coaching staff and player development team. We’ve built a very deep and versatile group, and that’s what you need to win in today’s NBA. We believe those are two fundamental aspects.
“We believe we have a lot of strengths and we’ll evaluate the team early in the regular season, but we’ll keep pushing, as we always have. Now we also have a few more assets to work with…”
