On Sunday night, Toronto Raptors fans continued the growing trend of booing the U.S. national anthem at sporting events in Canada. Following similar reactions at NHL games in Ottawa and Calgary, the protests resurfaced at Scotiabank Arena before the game against the LA Clippers.
The response comes just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump enforced new tariffs, imposing a 25% tax on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tax on imports from China. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau retaliated with similar measures.
Additional boos were heard in Vancouver before the Canucks-Red Wings NHL game. “It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is,” said Detroit’s Patrick Kane. Raptors’ Chris Boucher, on the other hand, pointed out the financial impact of the new tariffs.
While some fans joined in the boos, others, like Joseph Chua, opted for a more symbolic stance by remaining seated. “I usually stand for both anthems, but today felt different,” he said.
