Bill Simmons is under review by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission after admitting that he had his daughter’s boyfriend place sports bets on his behalf in Massachusetts. Simmons, the founder of The Ringer and one of the most popular sports podcasters in the United States, is based in California, where sports betting is not legal.
During a recent episode of his podcast, Simmons revealed that he had allowed his daughter’s boyfriend to log into his FanDuel account and place several wagers for him. The practice, known as proxy betting, is illegal in Massachusetts and is also prohibited by FanDuel.
According to NBC News, FanDuel reported the matter to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission and voided Simmons’ bets. The Commission confirmed that its staff was reviewing Simmons’ comments.
Simmons later said he had been unaware that proxy betting was prohibited in Massachusetts, adding that he had “learned his lesson.” The Bill Simmons Podcast is one of the most popular sports podcasts on Spotify, ranking No. 2 in the sports category as of Tuesday.
