Ben Simmons explained why he passed to Matisse Thybulle instead of attempting a dunk late in Game 7 against the Atlanta Hawks in 2021. The former Sixers guard expected Trae Young to provide defensive help more quickly.
Simmons described the decision as an instinctive read made in a split second. After seeing Thybulle cut toward the basket, he expected his teammate to finish the play and did not initially realize how much attention the possession would receive.
After reviewing the footage, Simmons acknowledged that attacking the rim would have been the better choice: “I should’ve just punched that.” However, he questioned why one possession became the defining moment of Philadelphia’s defeat instead of the entire game being examined.
