BCL: David Holston named MVP of February

The 1.67m/5'6'' tall man played like a giant this month

Since turning 36 in January, JDA Dijon’s point guard switched through gears and became unstoppable. For his performances against Hapoel U-NET Holon and Galatasaray Nef, David Holston has been named MVP of February in the Basketball Champions League.

The 1.67m/5’6” tall man played like a giant this month, getting 15 points, 9 assists and 5 steals in a 78-66 win over Hapoel U-NET Holon. He then followed it up with 18 points and 10 assists to stun the Galatasaray Nef crowd in Istanbul, leading Dijon to a 75-72 win with a dagger three-pointer late in the game.

Two games in the BCL may be a small sample size, but Holston’s fine run has translated to the French League too. He scored 23 points against Orleans, and 28 points with 10 assists against league leaders Boulogne-Levallois, and Dijon have gone 4-0 in all games in February with Holston on board.

They are up to 11-8 in the French League, two defeats behind the first place, and they know what it feels like to be at the top because that’s where they are standing in Group I of the Round of 16 in the Basketball Champions League, owning a 2-1 record, with Holon, Galatasaray and MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in their rear-view mirror.

Holston had a slow start to the Regular Season, getting 24 points total in his first three games, but then went on a run of two games with 19 and two games with 18 points, while dishing out eight or more assists in all three Round of 16 games.

He is currently averaging 12.7 points per game, and 6.3 assists are keeping him in sixth place in the BCL in that category. He had 21 steals this season, trailing only Dogus Ozdemiroglu, and Holston’s 28 three-pointers are the second most in BCL, behind Sasu Salin’s 35.

Holston already led Dijon to a third-place finish in the BCL back in 2020, if he keeps up this kind of form, don’t be surprised if coach Nenad Markovic, and players like Gavin Ware, Rashard Kelly and Khadeen Carrington get a taste of the Final Four in 2022.

The point guard will receive his MVP of February award before an upcoming home game in Dijon.
