BC Roma officially begins its journey with the goal of building a modern, ambitious and international basketball project in the Italian capital, deeply connected to Rome, its community and its extraordinary sporting culture.
The club will compete in the LBA Serie A, BKT EuroCup and LBA Italian Cup during the 2026-27 season, launching a project that aims to combine sporting competitiveness, international experience, talent development, community involvement and a new concept of the basketball experience.
At the heart of BC Roma’s vision is Rome: one of the world’s best-known cities, with a unique history and identity and the potential to become home to a basketball project capable of reaching not only passionate fans, but also families, young people and future generations.
The goal is to build a recognizable club deeply rooted in the local community, capable of developing a strong sense of belonging while looking to the future with an international perspective.
Donnie Nelson: “We want to build something that belongs to Rome”
At the heart of the project’s vision is Donnie Nelson, BC Roma’s majority shareholder, who has spent more than three decades working in international basketball and the NBA.
Donnie Nelson said:
“Rome is a unique city in the world, and we believe it has all the characteristics to become the home of an equally special basketball project. Our goal is not simply to build a competitive team: we want to create an organization with deep roots in the city, capable of involving the community, families and young people, and able to grow over time through an international vision. We want to build something that Rome can feel part of and be proud of.”
A project built on international expertise and experience
BC Roma was created with the goal of bringing expertise, experience and ideas from the world’s leading basketball cultures to the club.
As the project develops, the club intends to progressively benefit from the contributions of highly experienced figures from Italian, European and American basketball, who will provide expertise and guidance across different strategic areas.
The composition and structure of the club’s Advisory Board will be officially presented once the process of defining it has been completed.
The goal is to create a model that connects Rome, European basketball culture and international basketball experience, developing a modern structure focused on long-term growth.
The operational management and development of the project will be entrusted to a management structure coordinated by Roberto Carmenati, BC Roma’s sole director, who will serve as one of the key figures in the construction and organization of the club.
Carmenati will work closely with the ownership group and the club’s various departments, overseeing the development of the project during its first season.
Valerio Bianchini, Honorary President: history and the future of basketball
The connection with the history and culture of Italian basketball will be represented by Valerio Bianchini, Honorary President of BC Roma.
One of the most prominent figures in Italian basketball history, Bianchini will contribute to the project as a Senior Advisor, bringing his experience and serving as an important link between the history of basketball, Rome and younger generations.
Valerio Bianchini said:
“Rome has an extraordinary sporting culture and a basketball history that deserves to be valued and passed on to younger generations. This project is looking toward the future, but with the awareness that building something important requires knowing and respecting history. The challenge will be to create a club that Rome can identify with and that can bring more and more young people and families closer to basketball.”
Alessandro Magro appointed Head Coach of BC Roma
BC Roma has appointed Alessandro Magro as Head Coach of the first team for the 2026-27 season.
Born in 1982, Magro has gained significant experience in Italian and international basketball. He served as Head Coach of Germani Brescia from 2021 to 2024, winning the Italian Cup in 2023 and being named LBA Serie A Coach of the Year in 2022.
Throughout his career, he has also gained international experience in Russia, Poland and Lithuania, in addition to coaching the Italian Under-20 national team.
Magro’s appointment represents one of the first building blocks in the construction of the new club’s sporting identity and reflects the desire to develop a modern, competitive and recognizable team within a project designed to grow over time.
Magro and his coaching staff will have full responsibility for the team’s day-to-day technical management.
Alessandro Magro said:
“Joining a project that is born with this vision, in a city like Rome, represents a great responsibility and, at the same time, an extraordinary opportunity. We are starting with enthusiasm and with the awareness that there will be a lot of work to do. Our first objective will be to build, from the first day of training camp, a team with identity, a strong work ethic and a sense of belonging, capable of representing this club and this city in the best possible way.”
Sergio Scariolo, Special Advisor for Basketball Strategy
Sergio Scariolo, in his role as Special Advisor for Basketball Strategy, will contribute to the project through consulting and guidance on sporting and technical development strategies.
The collaboration will allow BC Roma to benefit from Scariolo’s experience at the highest levels of international basketball, with particular focus on developing an integrated technical model, nurturing talent, developing young players and building a shared sporting culture over time.
Scariolo’s contribution will be exclusively consultative and strategic, while responsibility for the team’s day-to-day technical management will remain with Head Coach Alessandro Magro and his coaching staff.
The goal: making Scariolo’s experience available to BC Roma
The goal is to make Sergio Scariolo’s experience available to the club, its management and technical department within a medium- to long-term development vision.
Sergio Scariolo said:
“I am happy to contribute to a project that looks not only at the team, but also at developing a broader basketball culture. My role will be to make my experience and expertise available to BC Roma, contributing to discussions on technical development strategies, the growth of young players and the construction of a sustainable model over time.
“Alessandro Magro and his staff will naturally have full responsibility for the team: my contribution will be exclusively one of consultation and dialogue, within a project that wants to look toward the future.
“I am and remain a coach, and this continues and will continue to be my professional path. At this stage, I have decided to dedicate part of my time to this initiative, which I am approaching with enthusiasm, also because of the long-standing relationships of friendship, respect and trust that I have with some of the people involved.”
A project focused on developing basketball in the local community
One of BC Roma’s objectives will be to progressively develop a relationship with Rome’s basketball community and the surrounding area, promoting dialogue, collaboration and the development of young players.
The international expertise and experience that the club intends to bring to the project could, over time, contribute to the development of a model capable of creating stronger connections between the first team, technical development, education and local basketball organizations.
August 20: first training camp in Rome
BC Roma will begin training camp on Thursday, August 20, at the Giulio Onesti Olympic Preparation Center in Rome, officially beginning preparations for the 2026-27 season.
