The first result of the new season is on the board: Bayern Munich successfully opened their preseason with a victory. Facing BBL rivals Ratiopharm Ulm, the Bavarians won 91-86 (48-45) at BMW Park on Saturday evening.
Anton Gavel’s team got off to a strong start, quickly building a lead (19-10 in the 7th minute) before closing the first quarter ahead 27-14. The three-pointers were not falling consistently yet, but Bayern were able to create fast-break opportunities through turnovers and repeatedly score easy points.
After halftime, things also improved from beyond the arc, with the Reds extending their lead to 75-59 in the 29th minute. Ulm managed to fight their way back once again, but during an intense final stretch, strong defense and composure from the free-throw line secured Bayern’s first preseason victory.
Gavel used 13 players and distributed the minutes among them. Guard Duane Washington (rested), as well as national team players Oscar da Silva and Johannes Thiemann, were still unavailable to the new coach. World champion Niels Giffey was the top scorer with 13 points on 5/7 shooting, followed by Miles Norris (12), center Austin Wiley (12 points, 9 rebounds) and Jo Voigtmann (11).
