Baskonia could part ways with Alex Len in the coming hours, according to AS. The Ukrainian center has been in Vitoria for almost a week, but his previous foot problem appears to have resurfaced.
Len missed the Super Cup in Badalona and did not travel with the team after being unable to complete his first practice with his new teammates.
Baskonia in need of frontcourt reinforcements
The situation leaves Baskonia particularly short-handed in the frontcourt ahead of the start of the EuroLeague season.
Khalifa Diop has moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers, while Alpha Diakite is with Dubai Basketball. The club had therefore been looking to strengthen the center position, with Len expected to provide size and experience.
The situation is even more complicated with several other players dealing with physical issues, including Markus Howard, Rodions Kurucs, Tadas Sedekerskis and Kenneth Faried.
Len’s foot problem resurfaces
Len arrived in Vitoria last Wednesday and took part in a photo shoot for the club’s communications department. He began training with his new teammates on Thursday but experienced discomfort and was unable to complete the session.
The 33-year-old had finished last season with plantar fascia problems in his left foot while playing for Real Madrid.
His contract could be terminated
Len’s absence from the trip to Badalona for the Super Cup immediately raised questions about his condition.
“He’s not here, I can’t say anything else… he’s not here,” head coach Paolo Galbiati said at Foronda Airport.
Several days later, Len had still not been officially presented by Baskonia.
According to sporting director Félix Fernández, the player had passed the required medical examinations, which were reportedly expected to pay particular attention to possible issues with his foot. However, his inability to complete his first training session and subsequent absence from the Super Cup have put his future in Vitoria in doubt.
