Several changes to the basketball rulebook will come into effect for the 2026-27 season, beginning with preseason games.
FIBA 2026: THE FOUL RULES ARE CHANGING! 🚨
Starting October 1, 2026, FIBA is completely reshaping how technical and unsportsmanlike actions are penalized to reward continuous play and stop foul baiting.
Here is what you need to know:
🛑 Technical Fouls Split in Two
- Category 1 (Behavioral): Taunting or disrespect. These count toward game disqualification.
- Category 2 (Administrative): Minor delays (like touching the ball after a score). These do NOT count toward ejection.
❌ Goodbye “Unsportsmanlike” Fouls
The old category is gone, replaced by:

- Disruptive Fouls: Tactical stops (e.g., stopping a fast break). Treated as normal team fouls.
- Flagrant Fouls: Dangerous physical contact. Counts directly toward ejection.
