Olimpia Milano have reached an agreement with Luca Banchi to appoint him as the team’s head coach until 2028. For the Tuscan coach, this marks a return to the Rossoneri. The deal has been agreed upon, with only the formalities remaining and signatures expected today, according to RealOlimpiaMilano. His position with the Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) also needs to be adjusted, moving from a full-time to a part-time role, allowing him to continue as head coach of the Italian national team.
According to the Milan-based outlet, Banchi is expected to lead his first practice on Monday, November 9, before making his official debut on Thursday, November 12, at 8:30 p.m. against Zalgiris Kaunas at the Unipol Forum in the EuroLeague. The new head coach will be tasked with turning around a team coming off eight consecutive defeats in the competition.
Some organizational details regarding his dual role still need to be worked out, particularly with several commitments involving both the club and the national team approaching. On November 24, Olimpia will travel to Lyon to face ASVEL in the EuroLeague, while on November 26, Italy will host Turkey in Rome, in a game that will also be attended by Italian President Sergio Mattarella. The schedule then calls for an away game against Serbia in Belgrade on November 29.
Three games in six days will require careful planning. Marco Ramondino, currently serving as Olimpia’s interim head coach and one of Banchi’s assistants with the national team, will also be involved in coordinating the commitments.
