A shockwave hits French basketball: ASVEL Villeurbanne plans to exit the EuroLeague after the 2025-26 season to rejoin the Basketball Champions League (BCL). The move would position the club for a spot in the upcoming NBA Europe, expected within the next few years.

Tired of financial losses and performance pressure, ASVEL follows Alba Berlin’s path back to FIBA’s ecosystem. According to the French daily, other teams may follow suit, while Monaco intends to stay loyal to EuroLeague.

Led by Tony Parker, NBA Hall of Famer and ambassador for the league’s European expansion, ASVEL aims to be among the twelve founding franchises of NBA Europe — alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Fenerbahçe — marking a historic turning point for French basketball.
