AS Monaco in transition, Hapoel Tel Aviv’s Yannay mocks club’s financial troubles

Hapoel Tel Aviv owner comments on Monaco’s situation on social media.

AS Monaco is currently in a transitional phase, with the Principality of Monaco expected to take temporary control of the club until a new majority owner is found.

The club released an official statement on its social media earlier today to clarify the situation.

Among the replies was a comment from Ofer Yannay, owner of Hapoel Tel Aviv, who jokingly addressed Monaco’s financial struggles on his X account. According to L’Equipe, Monaco are close to financial collapse, weighed down by debt and delayed salary payments.

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has reportedly frozen the finances of Aleksej Fedoricsev, the club’s main backer, leaving him unable to continue funding the project. In November, EuroLeague imposed a transfer ban and a €300,000 fine on Monaco for overdue payables, missing documentation, and lack of cooperation.

As a consequence, the club failed to register Cory Joseph in both the EuroLeague and the French League (LNB), despite signing him at the beginning of December. The Canadian guard has since joined Olympiacos Piraeus.

In December, LNB president Philippe Ausseur also confirmed that Monaco could be excluded from the playoffs if the club does not solve its administrative issues by the end of the regular season.

Yannay then teased Monaco with a potential offer of help should the club be forced to offload players due to financial problems:
“OK, however, if you wish to drop some players, I’m happy to help,” Yannay wrote on his X profile.
