Young, talented and with huge room for growth. APU Udine continue building for the future by investing in some of the best Italian prospects and have officially announced the signing of Matteo Cavallero, a 205-centimeter guard/forward born in 2003 and considered one of the most intriguing emerging talents in Italian basketball.
Coming off a steadily improving season with Urania Milano, Cavallero arrives in Udine after completing his entire development path within the Milanese club, where he progressed from the youth academy all the way to earning consistent minutes at the professional level.
Nicknamed “Airone” (“Heron”) for his long frame and athletic qualities, the Lombardy native stood out in the latest Serie A2 season by averaging 9.7 points and 4.7 rebounds in around 27 minutes per game, confirming his continuous technical and mental growth.
His performances also earned him a call-up to the Italian national team training camp last October by head coach Luca Banchi, another sign of the player’s value and long-term potential.
Cavallero has signed a three-year contract with APU Udine, underlining the club’s desire to invest in young Italian talents with long-term upside as part of its technical project.
“Cavallero is a player I had personally followed for quite some time,” said General Manager Andrea Conti. “We are talking about a young and talented player with a lot of potential still to develop, who has shown steady growth over the last few seasons with Urania Milano.
He is a versatile athlete, capable of covering multiple perimeter roles, and he will strengthen our Italian core with quality and energy. We strongly believe in his potential and that is why we decided to sign him to a three-year deal, convinced that he can become an important part of both our present and future project.
I am very happy with his arrival and I am convinced that, by working every day with coach Adriano Vertemati and within an ambitious and well-structured environment like Udine, he will be able to take another important step forward in his development.”
Cavallero also shared his excitement in his first words as a Udine player:
“I am truly happy to begin this new adventure in Udine. Over the past few years I had the chance to face APU several times as an opponent, and I always felt a healthy, passionate environment with a strong basketball identity. It is a city where you can truly breathe basketball, and that definitely played a big role in my decision.
I want to thank the club for the trust and the opportunity they have given me. For me, this will be my first season in Serie A and it represents the realization of a dream: every kid who starts playing basketball hopes one day to compete in the top division of his country. Doing it with a serious, organized and ambitious club like Udine makes me very proud and gives me huge motivation.
I consider myself a versatile player, fully willing to put myself at the service of the team and the group. I cannot wait to meet my new teammates, start working with the coaching staff and experience the atmosphere of the PalaCarnera together with our fans.
