Andrew Bogut believes Ben Simmons still has an important role to play with the Australian national team in the coming years. The three-time NBA All-Star has never suited up for the Boomers at senior level, but his participation in a national team mini-camp in Melbourne this week has reignited speculation about a long-awaited return.
Simmons also told 9 News that he is eager to represent Australia as preparations begin for the 2027 FIBA World Cup, despite not having played competitive basketball for roughly a year and a half.
Caporn and Giddey also support his comeback
“I hope he makes a comeback, gets back into the NBA and hopefully suits up for the Boomers one day,” Bogut told CODE Sports.
“He’s a multi-positional player, an elite defender, and when he’s in the right mindset he can create major problems offensively as well.“
Boomers head coach Adam Caporn also welcomed the possibility of Simmons returning to the national team.
“If you ask me whether I see a future for him with the Boomers, absolutely.“
Josh Giddey echoed that confidence after working with Simmons during the camp.
“He looks really good. He’s stayed in shape and has kept working. I believe he’ll be back in the NBA next season because that’s where he belongs.“
