The PAOK coach criticizes the current European basketball calendar: “The day FIBA, EuroLeague and domestic leagues sit at the same table will be a better day for European basketball”

Andrea Trinchieri has addressed one of the biggest issues in European basketball: the increasingly congested schedule and the difficulty teams and players face in managing a growing number of games.

Speaking to Meridian Sport, the Italian coach used a strong image to describe the current situation.

“Like leeches sucking your blood.”

“Everyone needs to have the same conditions”

According to Trinchieri, the main problem is the difference in rest and preparation between teams.

“In sport, the most important thing is that everyone has the same working conditions. You play on Sunday against someone who has rested, while you played a EuroLeague double week, where you got beaten up.”

The coach highlighted how difficult it can be to compete in a domestic game after an extremely demanding EuroLeague schedule.

“You get there and maybe you’re down 25-9… They’re going through your legs, they’re flying everywhere. That’s unfair.”

“FIBA, EuroLeague and domestic leagues must sit at the same table”

For Trinchieri, the solution necessarily requires all the organizations running the different competitions to work together.

“The day when we all sit down — FIBA, EuroLeague, ABA League, the German league… — and agree to fix the competition calendar, that will be the day that brings a better life to European basketball.”

The PAOK coach believes the competing interests of the different organizations ultimately create problems for the people on the court.

“Everyone is pulling the shirt, and eventually the shirt just tears apart and you’re left with only a piece of it in your hand.”

Trinchieri’s proposal

The Italian coach also put forward a concrete idea for restructuring the season.

“Four months of EuroLeague, three months of domestic competition, then two months of FIBA and one month when the players take a break and work individually on themselves.”

According to Trinchieri, such a structure would allow the different competitions to be separated more clearly while giving players dedicated time for recovery and individual development.
