A new chapter in Greece is about to begin for Andrea Trinchieri, who is ready to start his journey as the new head coach of PAOK Thessaloniki. The Italian coach spoke about the emotions surrounding this decision, the expectations for the project and the atmosphere he expects to find in one of the most passionate basketball environments in Europe, also drawing comparisons with his previous experience at Partizan Belgrade.
So, what kind of challenge is PAOK?
“It’s something different, because right now there is little or nothing. There’s nothing, except for a historic name and one half of a city vibrating with pure passion. The last truly successful and competitive years for PAOK at the highest level were in the late 1990s.
It’s very similar, with some substantial differences, to when I went to Belgrade. In 2018, Partizan was radioactive — nobody wanted to touch it.
One thing that gives me extra motivation is coaching in a place where there is real passion. If my job is to take a player and bring him to the next level, it becomes much easier to be demanding when you are pushed by the passion and love of the fans.
A coach asks his players for commitment, sacrifice and hard work. It’s easier when people recognize you every day, when you go for a coffee and someone tells you: ‘Great game yesterday.’
When people ignore you, whether you play well or badly, you start thinking: ‘Damn, today the coach is going to be on my back again.’
In my opinion, passion is a multiplier of energy and motivation. There’s nothing there, except for the owner…”
